In-the-Box Thinking Digital cinematography was originally dominated by what came to be called “box” cameras. Inside the box were phenomenal sensors and advanced digital image processing. The boxes could be tricked-out and accessorized to accommodate the cinematographer’s needs for virtually any kind of setup. At this year’s NAB, Blackmagic introduced its own entry, the PYXIS 6K. Behind the lens mount, which can be ordered as either an EF, PL, or L-mount, is a full-frame 36 x 24mm sensor capable of 13 stops of truly high dynamic range (HDR) recording. For anytime, anywhere shooting the PYXIS boasts dual native ISO that at its top end of 25,600 is optimized for low noise. The primary native ISO is 400 and there is a secondary base ISO of 3200 which, when combined with the 13-stop range, is perfect for working with available light. The sensor can also handle a wide range of resolutions and frame rates. On the right side is a large, bright 4” HDR color display for checking the image and interacting with the Camera OS features. The left side is an attach point for a variety of mounting plates that expand the camera’s versatility. The PYXIS can record to either CFexpress media (two slots) or an external drive via USB-C. Shooting in Blackmagic RAW, a single 256GB CFexpress card will hold a full hour’s worth of 6K media. The company notes that when using their RAW files, you can edit directly from the card in DaVinci Resolve.
