Blackmagic Design Lets Loose a Flood of Products at NAB By Ric Getter Like so many companies in the video business, Blackmagic Design recognizes April’s NAB as the ideal venue to debut new products. And this year, the company went all out, unveiling more new hardware and major updates than ever. Normally, CEO Grant Petty’s informative new product video intros usually run about an hour. This year, he more than doubled that with a presentation that was a feature-length two hours. (If you don’t have time to sit through the entire thing, at least watch the stunning tribute to DaVinci Resolve 19 at the open.) Because it would take novel-length article do justice to this year’s announcements, we’ll focus on what we think are some of the most significant highlights. But there’s no shortage of those. This year, Blackmagic has gone all in on SMPTE 2110, the new, 10G Ethernet protocol for a high framerate, UltraHD signal flow. By designing into products that go from source to destination and everything in between, the company was able to create its own IP codecs that neither degrade signal flow nor require racks full of expensive hardware for compression and conversion. They created a process that fits on a chip. The literal centerpiece of this approach is the Blackmagic Ethernet Switch 360, designed specifically for film and video using 2110. It features 16 10G ports and two 100G to connect via either copper or fiber. What makes the switcher even more unique are its monitor video outputs (HDMI and SDI) that shows a beautifully laid out network status dashboard. The switch also handles power over Ethernet (POE) for single-cable support for its new cameras and other video gear. The new entries in Blackmagic’s Constellation line of affordable single and dual M/E switchers support 12G SDI inputs and 4K signals.
