Adobe Announces AI Enhancements & an .io Overhaul By Ric Getter Two big announcements that sprouted from Adobe this spring will add to the garden of delights for video and film teams along with photographers. Frame.io received a major foundational upgrade while Lightroom and Premiere Pro are receiving some GenAI tools that were recently telegraphed as part of Adobe Sneaks at last year’s MAX conference. A Blank Sheet Though Frame.io only appeared in 2015, it now boasts over 4 million users, representing 80% of the Fortune 500 companies. It has become something of an industry standard, facilitating workflows between companies and clients as well as contractors. Frame.io’s agility, being sensitive to new needs in a very dynamic industry is a big part of the reason why the company progressed so far so quickly. In a pre-NAB call, Emery Wells, co-founder Frame.io, and now VP of the Creative Product Group at Adobe, told us that one of the disadvantages of moving so quickly is that the overall design and integration can lose some of its focus. Wells said that the new version 4 represents a “blank state” update. Their team took everything they learned, enhanced the best features and fixed some of its weak points and essentially recoded Frame.io from scratch. It maintains the best aspects of its look and feel but improved the continuity of the user experience. Both producers and enterprise IT managers will appreciate Frame.io’s expanded account management structure. Privileges and restrictions are more granular and, for large shops, it can be hooked into Active Directory identity management. Frame.io’s new look should cheer rather than confuse its user base. It has taken some clues from the tools they’re used to using (Adobe’s) to make their layout more efficient and intuitive. They’ve adopted a panel-based design where the need for the asset they’re working with flank the main window. Knowing that those inspecting the assets all have unique needs, the view can be customized to make their job easier and more effective. The way Frame.io handles asset metadata has been overhauled to allow much more freedom in its creation and management. When metadata has been well thought through, it can greatly simplify and speed up workflows that involve multiple individuals and groups.
