FEATURE VIDEO PRODUCTION If video production is your passion, there is no better time than to start your career today. Over the past four years, the number of video production professionals has grown by 14 percent. This is more than any other profession has grown in between the years 2006 and 2010. For the next six years, the number of professionals is expected to continue to grow. Although this career is very popular, salaries are lower than other professions. The median salary is 10 percent less than the median national salary. In 2010, the median was $51,970. In addition, it is interesting to note that as student graduation is up, the number of schools offering video production programs has decreased. Currently there are 424 programs offered. ANIMATION Always loved cartoons? Then animation is the career for you. In 2010, there were 229,120 animation professionals working in the United States. Between the years 2006 and 2010, salaries for animation professionals grew by 10 percent. However, an animation professional is earning 19 percent less than the national median salary. In addition more and more students are choosing to study animation. In 2006, there were 2,035 students who graduated with an animation degree, and in 2010 there were 4,947. While student graduation is up, the number of schools offering animation programs has also increased. Currently there are 358 programs offered nationwide. FILM Movies have the power to take you to another time. Your imagination is the key to the next movie that will define your generation. Be the next Steven Spielberg, and start making movie magic. In 2010, there were 82,430 film professionals working in the United States. In the past four years, though, this number has shrunk by 4 percent. Although the median salary is $31,062, that is 48 percent less than the national median salary. But this hasn't stopped students from majoring in film. The growth in the number of students graduating from film courses is greater than the change nationally for students graduating in anything else. In addition, there are more schools offering film programs; currently there are 521. VIDEO GAME DESIGN Video game design is a very popular and growing career. In 2010, there were 1,051,700 video game design professionals were working in the United States. Between 2006 and 2012, this number has grown by 384 percent. Nationally, a game designer is 2010 was making on average $65,155, which is 2 percent more than any other average professional would make. More and more students continue to gain interest in this new millennium profession. And as students keep majoring in video game design, more and more schools are offering courses. Currently, there are 328 schools in the nation that offer the courses you need to create the next sensation. WEB DEVELOPMENT Find new, novel ways to develop web technologies. Not only is web development a career in demand, but it is also a very lucrative one. There were 243,330 web development professionals were working in the United States in the year 2010, and their median salary was $75,660 per year. This is 16 percent more than the national median salary for all professions. However, from 2006 to 2010 there was a decline in the number of graduates, and a decline in the number of schools that offer web development. MacDirectory 61
