All the critical operator controls are available via eight lighted buttons that sit above the solid, weighted knob. Beside them are two recessed buttons that are critical for setup, yet it’s critically important not to hit them when you’re on air. In fact, they’re a little extra springy, so it does take a conscious effort to activate them. This is a good thing because there’s no extra monitor output for the settings menus and controls. They’re overlaid directly on the video coming from the HDMI output. What’s On Top The smooth, weighted knob is virtually the same as the one in the DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor. Its weight provides just enough inertia to do things smoothly and the body is covered by textured rubber for an extra-sure feel. Among the main control buttons, there are a couple what are somewhat unique to DaVinci and may need some explanation. Rather than a traditional shuttle, the HyperDeck Shuttle uses a scroll feature (SCR) that will be familiar to DaVinci Resolve editors. It serves a similar purpose of getting you through a lot of video in a very short time with the added benefit that it can scroll through all the clips on your playback device. A menu setting lets you control scroll speed and we found dialing it (way) back from its 50x maximum speed to be helpful. But what about shuttle? More on that later. Whether in scroll or playback, there are times when you don’t want to jump to the next clip in line. That’s where the CLIP button comes in handy. When active, it will limit the controls to the current clip. There are a load of settings stashed away in the on-screen controls. In fact, you’ll find nearly all that are available on Blackmagic Design’s larger HyperDecks. One important note is that setting the record codec will also limit the playback to videos with that codec. There can be clips with a variety of codecs on your storage media, they just can’t be seen by the Shuttle unless that codec is selected for recording.
