FiOS is called a "Fiber to the Premises," or FTTP service, since it brings fiber optic data transmission to residential homes as well as businesses. Since fiber optic technology sends data via pulses of light, it is the fastest method of transferring data. UMPC > "Ultra-mobile PC" is a hand-held computing device capable of running a Windows operating system. It is larger than a personal digital assistant but smaller than a laptop. Microsoft and Intel created a design specification for the UMPC in a project called Origami. SEO > Stands for search engine optimization, and it is the process of increasing the amount of visitors to a Web site by ranking high in the search results of a search engine. The higher a Web site ranks in the results of a search, the greater the chance that that site will be visited by a user. It is common practice for Internet users to not click through pages and pages of search results, so where a site ranks in a search is essential for directing more traffic toward the site. SEO helps to ensure that a site is accessible to a search engine and improves the chances that the site will be found by the search engine. Back or Inbound Link > In SEO terminology, a backlink is a hyperlink that links from a Web page, back to your own Web page or Web site. These links are important in determining the popularity (or importance) of your site. Some search engines, including Google, will consider Web sites with more backlinks more relevant in search results pages. Quality Backlink > In SEO terminology, a quality backlink is a backlink that links another Web site to your site using your keywords or keyword phrase. Also appears on a Web site that has the same theme or similar content topic as your own site. Google Dance > In SEO terminology, Google Dance is an outdated slang term used to describe the period of time in which Google used to rebuild its rankings, and as a result of this rebuilding, rankings of Web sites on Google's SERP may fluctuate in order during a period of several days. The "Google Dance" would occur up to 36 times per year, but in 2003 Google began updating its index on a weekly basis, all but eliminating the Google Dance. Comment Spam > In SEO terminology, it is any comment that has been posted to a blog for the purpose of generating an inbound link to the comment author's own site or blog. Raw Hits > In online advertising, the term is used to refer to the total number of visits to any Web site, or clicks on a specific ad, including repeat visitors and clicks. Zip Code Targeting > In online advertising, the geographical targeting of advertisements based on the visitors' zip code. An example of zip code targeting is when an online publication requires visitors to register to read the site's content. Once logged in, the visitor will see local advertisements based on the zip code the user entered when registering. Consumer Bounty > An affiliate marketing slang term used to describe a payment made by a merchant to an affiliate for each new customer they send to the merchant. Associate > To link a certain type of file to a specific application. In MS- DOS and Windows environments, the file's type is specified by its three-character extension. Once a file type has been associated with an application, selecting any file of that type automatically starts its associated application and loads the selected file.
