Of all of these great apps, the one I would be most miserable without is St. Clair Software’s Default Folder X (stclairsoft.com). The name is a misnomer, but calling it WhatOpenSaveDialogBoxesShouldHaveDoneAllAlong would have been a stretch. And, it still lets you set a default folder for saving docs for each of your applications. Though there is a menu bar icon, nearly all of DFX’s features show up when you’re opening and saving files in the form of a strip of icons running down the right side of the dialog box. Most of the time, you really don’t even need those, because the most-often used feature is the ability to click on a folder anywhere on your desktop to have the dialog jump right there. But those icons do come in handy, letting you jump directly to recent files and folder. With the Utility menu, you can rename, move, delete, and a host of other things right from the dialog. This is great for fixing the name or location of a file-save operation you fat-fingered. Unlike a lot of the Finder-replacement software that’s out there, Default Folder X doesn’t make a lot of changes to the interface you need to get used to. It’s there when you need it. And you’ll soon find that you’ll be needing it a lot. And $34.95 isn’t a lot to pay for the amount of time it saves. As wonderful as the macOS is, it can never be all things to all people. But thanks to the work of some like-minded independent developers who have been part of the Mac community as long as Macs have been around, it can get even closer to fulfilling all your needs. These auteur-developers aren’t all making a lot of money and for some it started out as a labor of love. But they’ve kept at it over the years and my life behind my Mac has been a lot better as a result of their great work.
