Unlike many other Adobe notables, Julianne Kost did not rise from the ranks of Adobe’s product management or marketing teams. She started out at the company in a customer support role where she was able to polish her skills as a first-rate explainer. Interacting with actual users turned out to be the perfect training ground for her. Adobe not only noticed her effectiveness helping their customers, they recognized that she was one of those rare visual artists who could articulate her creative processes in a way that was not only easily comprehensible to others. In her current role as Principal Digital Imaging Evangelist she gets to help and inspire far more users than she could in Support. In her classes, she sings the praises of the Photoshop and Lightroom “alphabets,” the single keystrokes that leave your mind and mouse free for the artistic stuff. Her in-person teaching style is fast-paced (making one grateful for the fact that she also produces superb video lessons) but she remains easy to listen to with just the right balance of information and personality. Her two books, Passenger Seat and Window Seat (both available in the Apple Bookstore), explore and explain both her technique and her philosophy as an artist. Will Adobe MAX return to the LA Convention Center as a live event in 2022 or will it remain online. It’s true that no webcast can match the excitement of seeing celebrities like Ron Howard or Billie Eilish live onstage (or even Jason Levine bounding around the podium). But then we find the online sessions far more effective and accessible than the in-person variety. But wherever and however it is, we’ll be looking forward to it!
