For 2022, Lightroom masking has come out of the closet and is now a headline feature of the program. The expanded masking panel has opened up easy access to what once were the mysterious maneuvers the experts use and added a bunch of new capabilities that we’ll all be exploring for some time to come. Even Sensei has gotten onboard to lend a hand with smart masking, saving time and effort on those “edge cases.” Not only does it help with that, it now adds Select Subject and Select Sky as masking options. Fine-tuning the mask selections has become far easier, as well. This comes with a number of other common-sense options (like automatically recentering the slider controls after masking) that have added extra clicks and tripped-up workflows in the past. (Dare we say that masking in Lightroom finally works as it always should have?) As you would expect, all of these great new masking tools have also migrated to Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), for those who prefer a Photoshop-centric workflow. The sky's not the limit in Lightroom's new masking toolbox
