The Color of (Less) Money There were other significant price reductions in Blackmagic Design’s famed color-grading control surfaces. The Micro Panel dropped $200 to $795 and the Mini Panel went down $1,000 to $1,999. On the other hand, the compact Speed Editor was bumped up to $395. We’re no fan of price increases, but have to admit that the Speed Editor is still a great value considering, like all of the other Davinci Resolve control surfaces and cameras, it includes a full license for Davinci Resolve Studio that’s worth $295. The Speed Editor’s new price makes the choice between it and the Editing Keyboard more difficult. If you have the space and the extra $200, the Editor Keyboard is arguably the better value, especially if your work involves spending more time in the Edit rather than Cut pages. Both devices still have some, albeit limited functionality in the Fairlight Audio, DaVinci Color and Resolve Effects modes. However Blackmagic Design is known for adding new features through software and firmware updates. So we’re loath to speculate, that may change. The fact that this is such a hard choice says a lot for Blackmagic Design as a company. Though based in the Land Down Under, the company’s approach to its software and control surfaces is pure Hollywood. That customer base demands the best and they look to BMD to provide it, as they have done for decades with DaVinci color grading, Fairlight audio, Fusion effects, and more recently, Resolve editing tools. The pros know that these won’t necessarily guarantee an Oscar or Emmy. But there will be nothing about them that will stand in one’s way. As video and audio creatives, that’s the best we can ask for.
