CLOSER LOOK PRATT INSTITUTE > FALL 2012 HIGHLIGHTS WORDS BY CLAUDIA PAREDES This fall, Pratt Institute's Center for Continuing and Professional Studies is offering two brand new courses. One will challenge your graphic design skills, and the other will give you a different perspective on photography. Graphic Design Ideas to Formwill consist of 10 sessions every Saturday, from Sept. 22 to Dec. 1. This course will teach you about contemporary graphic design, and methods to enhance one's creativity. Learn how to research for a graphic design project, and how to convey ideas through typography and module structure. This course will put an end to perhaps the greatest fear that most graphic designers have: Where do I start? Many designers harbor the fear of beginning a project. This course will teach you the strategies for finding ideas and unleashing creativity, eliminating the fear. Now you can look forward to the whole process of getting started on something new by understanding the language and coordinates of professional graphic design. Every class will involve a set of coordinated design exercises, brainstorming session to deepen your capacity and take your work to the next level. Learn how to handle anxiety with anticipation. Now designing, more than ever, will become a positive and exciting experience you have been longing for. There are some prerequisites for this class. Students enrolling must have a working knowledge of the Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator. Scott Santoro will be teaching this course and guiding each student to unleash their own creativity. Santoro is co-principal of the graphic design studio Worksight, and for the past 20 years, he has been crafting designs for large and small companies. He also has a MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, and has served as vice president of the AIGA NY, and as design committee member for the Fulbright program. Santoro is a well recognized international speak on design, and has taught at NYU, Parsons, SVA, and the Cooper Union. In addition toGraphi c Design Ideas to Form, Santoro, the adjunct professor at Pratt sessions will teach you how to use photography to effectively document or promote art. Lighting is a major part of the course, because the proper lighting can enhance the accuracy and beauty of the artwork being shot. In addition, there will be a guest artist who will use his personal experience as insight. There are many other techniques that will be explored such as 2D and 3D artwork, and also post production and technical issues. Paul Lachenauer, working photographer employed by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, will be teaching the course at Pratt Institute. He has extensive experience photographing museum's collections, which makes him very qualified to teach this course. Lachenauer is originally from Detroit and is a graduate of Northern Michigan University. He has been a professional photographer for more than 30 years, and has had exhibitions of his work at Pratt Institute, at Johnson & Johnson world Institute, is also teaching three other design courses. The second course that you cannot miss this fall is Artwork and Museum Photography. Meeting Wednesday afternoons from Oct. 3 to Dec. 5, this course is designed to teach photographers, artists, curators, and other museum professionals how to photograph artwork and other objects. Specifically, it will focus on photography that will be in a presentation, publication, online catalogues, and portfolios. These 10 headquarters in New Jersey, and at The Interchurch Center NYC, among others. His work has also appeared in various museum publications, such as "Contemporary Ceramics," "Art and Oracle," and "The Year One" to mention a few. In addition his work is also in the permanent collection of The Brooklyn Museum, The Museum of The City of New York, The New York Public Library, and The Detroit Historical Museum.
