MacDirectory 19 DEPARTMENT APPLE BITES NEWS APPLE INC ACQUIRES DATABASE COMPANY FOUNDATIONDB Apple Inc acquired FoundationDB, a database company. As per the report by TechCrunch, FoundationDB is a company that "develops scalable and fault tolerant databases that support multiple data models." According to an announcement on the company's website it has stopped to offer downloads after deciding to "evolve [the] company mission." TechCrunch states that FoundationDB might have been a smart purchase for Apple because of its capability to handle ACID-compliant transactions quickly and its strong scalability. A company blog post suggested it could achieve 54 billion writes per hour at a cost-per-write of 3 nano-dollars. Apple confirmed the acquisition with the standard statement: "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans." ABC was recently invited to Apple's top-secret health and fitness lab for the Apple Watch for an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the testing facility, accompanied by Apple executives Jeff Williams and Jay Blahnik. The network shared a preview of its visit on Good Morning America, and has now provided a closer look at the facility on the latest episode of late night show Nightline. LAUNCHER RETURNS TO THE APP STORE Launcher, an app that Apple banned half a year ago made a return to the App Store. This app that allows users to open several apps on their iPhones without having to unlock them first, it was banned for violating the company's protocol for apps and widgets. After its ban, developer Greg Gardner tried to have Launcher returned to the App Store. This resulted in the creation of a simpler version of it, but that too was denied. Finally, he resubmitted after the company relaxed its policies on apps and widgets and it was approved, Business Insider reported. Launcher includes four categories that can be used to create buttons on the Notification Center. These categories are Contact, Web, App, and Custom. Each of the categories work as named and the Custom one allows for custom buttons to be created. 8 7
