Project Primrose One piece of sage advice followed by nearly all major enterprises is to stick with your core strengths. For Adobe, that has been software and evaluating online media’s impact on audiences. (The latter is lesser known to folks like us, but Adobe is a heavy hitter in that arena with its Experience Cloud for enterprise.) However, Adobe Research Scientist Christine Dierk apparently harbors a secret passion for fashion. Unlike her office-casual attired fellow presenters, she stood behind her podium in a stunning, shining white evening gown and began her talk by saying how so many Adobe products, from Illustrator to Substance 3D, have had such an impact on fashion design and marketing. But what if the technology that let made it so easy to iterate different designs could be applied to the clothing itself? As, Ms. Dierk stepped out from behind the podium and the spotlight on her dimmed just a bit. On cue, her shining white gown instantly changed into a shining silver gray one. And then switched to a pattern of the two tones and repeated this several times. There was applause, of course, but this was almost drowned out by the exclamations of amazement coming from the audience and on stage. And then the design began to animate. She needed to manually switch between designs and launch the animations. But then she showed off another feature: an animation driven by a motion sensor in the dress, the animation followed her movements. Will this power Adobe into the garment industry? We can’t speak on any plans it has for invading 7th Avenue, but we placed a coffee bet with one of our colleagues that we’ll see something like this on the Academy Awards red carpet within two years. The full session of the 11 sneaks is available online with the other conference videos. To repeat Adobe’s usual disclaimer, not all Sneaked features will make it into production. But based on experience, don’t be surprised to see some at the main keynote next fall. And possibly on the red carpet on some Oscar’s night. Can’t decide what to wear? Then don’t.
