The industry should also enlighten and educate. But for a lot of reasons, a large portion of the viewing public want to rewatch yesterday’s content, given the uncertainties of today’s environment. In addition, it can be just plain fun to watch that movie or show you really enjoyed years ago and be thrilled/amazed all over again. For example, Dr Who first appeared in 1963 and has remained popular by changing with the times. Audiences like their old “comfort” shows and movies--especially when they are brought current and relevant with today’s lifestyle. By the same token, film genres have their ebb and flow. Loss is even more precarious since the industry embraced all of the capabilities and benefits of digital cameras. Sure, film is fragile and expensive to save but digital content is even tougher to save/protect because it goes directly to a storage device and increasingly, the cloud. The biggest problem with cloud archiving is stuff happens! After all, cloud archiving is only your digital creative work stored on drives in someone’s storage facility or more likely several storage facilities located here, there, over there and… That’s probably why folks like filmmaker Ang Lee and indie acquaintances John Putch (putchfilms.com) and Cirina Catania (cirinacatania.com) also keep a few drives of their content strategically located … just in case. All of that extra work, expense and attention to detail seems to be increasingly important to people around the globe as we go back to the future. Everyone seems to be excited about new films like Super Mario Bros, John Wick 4, Adipurush, and Jawan as well as series like Sky High, The Night Agent, Gotham Knights, The Consultant and Mayfield Witches and fresh material from around the globe. But there are times when you want some comfort entertainment like Terminator, E.T., Aliens, the first Indiana Jones or Die Hard when Harrison Ford and Bruce Willis were both young(er). Even better would be a couple of the initial series of The Outer Limits, Star Trek, Atom Ant, I Spy, Daniel Boone, or even some of the earlier segments of Dr. Who. The movies and shows may look barbaric, crude, even naïve compared to life, films and shows today; but they’re often a pleasant respite from today’s chaos. Then you can jump up all refreshed and begin working on tomorrow’s classics today. All you have to do is keep in mind what Young Doc said, “Remember, where you're going, there are no roads.” The new/old entertainment is just waiting to be written, scripted, produced, posted and distributed.
