The shutdowns and dramatic travel restrictions made it quickly become an industry standard and it is perhaps one of the few things that actually was a good outcome of the pandemic. Sony and almost everyone else has developed a strategy that streamlines almost every aspect from pre-vis through on-set visual production. From what we’ve seen/read, there’s a rush to get new virtual studios built in Toronto, Ontario, Atlanta, Texas, New Jersey, London, Berlin, Cape Town, Kenya, Nairobi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Tokyo, Auckland and just about everywhere. The LED walls, Epic’s Unity engine and other virtual production technologies have quickly become the necessary checkmark for any project. Yes, the new facilities have forced a lot of changes in the production crew and their work but they also streamline the production process while reducing costs and the project’s environmental impact. Today, virtual production includes an array of tools that keep projects on track and enable creative collaboration across sites and even around the globe, saving time, money and travel. The way Shapiro has been “creeping” into the content production industry, we’ll probably see more of the players beyond Adobe, Avid and a few other industry leaders at next year’s CES.
