The Beach Bum is Tower's first entry into the market, though if its riders are to be believed, it likely won't be the last. As the name implies, the Beach Bum is targeted towards casual cruising on paved surfaces (or boardwalks!), but comes with a powerful motor and large power supply making it fairly versatile in a lot of situations. The aesthetics and components are all designed and selected with those beach cruiser goals in mind. The thick tires and long, sweeping lines look ever y bit the par t, and the swept back handlebars combine with the generous saddle seat to keep you at ease throughout your ride. Many of the components of the Beach Bum are sourced from well-known manufacturers, like the aforementioned fat tires, which come courtesy of Schwalbe. These Fat Frank Balloon Tires come with run f lat technology, a gorgeous white sidewall, and built-in reflective strip on the sides. These kind of components and features exist throughout the Beach Bum, including the Velo seat, Shimano gears, and Tektro disc brakes. The aforementioned batter y and motor are also well-selected with an equal eye for affordability and performance. The 48 volt, 14 amp hour battery has been specially tuned by Tower to provide ideal torque for climbing hills and getting up to speed. Meanwhile, its generous size should make getting 30 miles on this pack easy between recharges! The electrical component itself is all controlled on the handlebars, with a pedal assist meter ranging from 1 to 5 on the left, and a throttle on the right. Pick your appropriate pedal assist, and the motor will kick in to make sure that you are hitting the expected number of rotations as you pedal the bike. Or, rely on the throttle to manually control how much juice you're pulling from the battery. Using the throttle, you can easily cruise around town without pedaling at all! The same LCD readout that tracks your level of pedal assist also provides a battery indicator, making sure you are never surprised by a dead battery. When necessary, it charges through an XLR charging port, and is accessed with the included key (to make sure no one steals your battery!). It's centrally mounted - great for weight distribution - and includes a controller that is built into the frame of the bike, making for a very easy charging experience. All of the components are mounted on the aluminum frame, and the bike weighs in at just under 50 pounds total. It's light enough that it can still be operated without any help from the motor, though you won't be carrying it up and down the stairs a lot. Even the frame was not beyond beach cruising consideration—the double-tubed lateral bar provides a place to stash a U-lock when riding around, and barefoot pedals accommodate even the most bohemian beach goers. The Beach Bum Electric Cruiser Bike from Tower provides a compelling reason to jump into the future of transportation and check out ever y thing that e-bikes have to of fer. At just under $1,700, riders can expect quality components, more-than- adequate power, and the customer service that Tower is known for.
