Last year, Detroit-based luxury brand Shinola, released a new line of watches. Never shy of their Detroit pride, the company fused their own name with the city they call home—and came up with Detrola. The Detrola watches are much more casual and playful than typical Shinola fare and make for a perfect summer watch. The first thing you'll notice about the Detrola watches is the crazy, eye- catching color combinations. Bright bands and cases are paired with faces of equal vibrancy and customized details. Some colorways seem to be targeted at women, like the dazzling and brand- new Peony variant or The Pinky. Others are more masculine, including a classic blackout option, or the Model D, while others are more ambiguous (the bright Gumball, flashy Ace, or bold Radio Flyer). And, since this is Shinola, there are some Michigan-specific options, with the likes of a Detroit Tigers colorway (both home and away versions!), a brilliantly green Michigan State Spartans watch, and a maize and navy University of Michigan watch that will surely adorn the wrist of many alumni this year. One of my favorites for its versatility is The Daily Wear—a navy and gray rendition that gets its name from the classic color combination that is easy to wear with anything. A navy band is paired with a navy watch face, with bright white markings and a metallic case. The underside of the watch bears the serial number, and in the case of the Daily Wear, a transparent casing that gives you a peek into the inner workings of the watch. It's cool and not gimmicky, only seen when you want to take a look.
