iPadOS – a place of its own WApple finally recognized that the iPad is no longer just an overgrown iPhone and has given it an OS of its own, iPadOS. Multitasking has matured magnificently. Slide Over provides a carousel-like selection of applications ready to share your screen with a full-screen application. And you can now have multiple windows of an app open at the same time. There’s even a macOS-like App Exposé feature that shows all those open windows. iCloud drive now supports folder sharing (move over Dropbox) and will let you plug in a thumb drive for storage. Enterprise users will be happy to hear that Files will support SMB transfers and Microsoft Azure single sign-on. And finally, Apple has opened up direct camera import into Lightroom! One of our main iPad annoyances was finally eliminated with new three-finger gestures to copy, paste and undo. (Be honest, how many of you have reverted to the delete key to avoid the embarrassment of shaking your tablet in public?) The software that drives Apple Pencil has halved its already best-of-class latency and it has a new tool palette and a much easier way to grab and mark up a page and share it with someone. You can even use it to tap on the new thumb-size onscreen keyboard. iPad OS teams up with the upcoming macOS `to become not only an extended display, but an extended, Pencil-ready control surface, giving you what is normally a very expensive video tablet using a feature called Sidecar. (According to various online reports, the fact that this feature and type-and-swipe may have been co-opted from now-defunct third-parties did not escape notice of ongoing Senate anti-trust investigations.)
