Welcome to Catalina The naming of the latest macOS jumped from the desert to the Southern California coast: Catalina. Like most of its predecessors, it’s a comfortably incremental update, with one notable exception: the end of iTunes, arguably one of the most world-changing applications ever produced since the VisiCalc spreadsheet. (On the evening of the keynote, NPR broadcast an obituary worthy of a major celebrity for the program.) Once the proud centerpiece of Steve Job’s Digital Hub, its domain has been divvied up into separate applications following the lead of Apple’s mobile devices. You’ll access those device’s sync functions through a Finder window though, we’re told, they will still look and act very much like iTunes’ device screens. Apple Music will, of course, be optimized for the service’s subscribers, though at press-time it wasn’t clear whether you’ll be ripping CDs from here or the Finder. Catalina’s Apple TV app will support 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos on newer desktop Macs and MacBook Pros. Podcasts will also have a home of their own.
