SCIENCE NOTEBOOK
We all know that Internet radio offers a
pretty impressive array of music choices
from all corners of the globe. Unlike
mainstream FM and AM radio, Internet
radio is not hampered by government
regulations that can limit the quality of
the music selection. Further, Internet
radio does not have any – or at least
fewer – of the often-annoying
advertisements that plague traditional FM
and AM radio. But since these radio
stations are Internet-based, listeners are
probably accustomed to listening to these
innovative stations only when you are
near a computer.
So what happens when you are away
from the computer? Thanks to wireless
Internet radio, you now can listen to all
the cool tunes – and all the informative
podcasts -- without being "chained to
your computer." Listen to wireless Internet
radio in any room of the house, even in
the bathroom.
Wireless Internet Radio
Options
One great portable way to listen wireless
Internet radio is with the Pico Wi-fi from
Revo. This device automatically connects
to your Wi-Fi network to access the
Reciva Internet Radio Gateway. Users
will have access to about 8,600
international Internet radio stations.
Since the batteries on this portable radio
have an eight-hour life, you can listen to
all of your music in an uninterrupted
manner, worry free.
Further, the Pico Wi-fi can decode a
number of different streams, including
MP3, RealAudio, Microsoft Windows
Media Audio, WAV and more. This
device is also splash-proof and comes
complete with an infrared remote for
convenience. Users can search stations
by country or genre, and if they ever get
the urge to listen to more traditional
radio at any time, the Pico Wi-fi comes
complete with FM radio reception. Also,
for iPod fans out there, there is the ability
to plug into the Pico M-Port for an instant
cordless speaker system.
Other wireless Internet radios on the
market today include the lightweight
Phoenix from Com One, the "retro
looking" Noxon wireless Internet radio
from Terratec, and the NetWorksGo
radio from Tivoli Audio.
