iPhone OS 3.0
Scott Forstall announced that the release
of iPhone OS 3.0 would come two days
ahead of the new hardware's arrival. For
many, this will be almost as much fun as a
new phone. The new features this update
offers are far too numerous to list. Many,
like cut, copy and paste, Spotlight, the
landscape keyboard option and Notebook
sync are bound to have broad appeal.
Others like improved Exchange and a
somewhat narrower audience will cheer
CalDAV support, enhanced Parental
Controls and added localizations.
As this issue goes to press, AT&T has yet to
offer its customers any concrete
information on its support or possible extra
charges for tethering laptops or MMS
(Multimedia Messaging Services). There
were some ominous grumblings from the
audience at the failure of the carrier's logo
to appear on these two presentation slides.
Fortunately, Forstall didn't mention the
$200 premium existing AT&T customers
will have to pay for an "early upgrade" if
they've owned their iPhone for less than a
year, otherwise things may have gotten
really ugly in the hall.
