“Social letters” FONTLAB.COM Ever seen a ransom note made from cut-out magazine letters? Each letter has its own style, size, color… but it’s the wonky, inconsistent spacing that truly makes it unreadable (figure 1). Good spacing makes fonts inviting. Bad spacing makes them repel readers. FontLab 8 gives you the tools to space your font to perfection. Letters are social creatures. They cluster together to form words and sentences. Each letter needs just the right amount of personal space — not too little, not too much. In a well-spaced font, that space is visually equal between all letter combinations. Since every letter has a unique shape, “visually” equal isn’t the same as “mathematically” equal.
