DaVinci 18 On Your Personal Cloud By Ric Getter As a company, along with rescuing great products like Fairlight, Ultimatte, and ATEM from corporate demise, Blackmagic Design tends to take very original approaches to conventional ideas. The results are often astounding capabilities with equally astounding affordability. At NAB in April, the company did that once again. The target this time was the Cloud. They transformed the idea into a very personal and private thing, two terms not commonly associated with the Cloud computing. And this was just one of a whole host of announcements. Even a brief summary would far exceed our available page count, so we’ll focus in on some of the key points and the impact we expect to see from them on the industry. A Cloud of Your Own When you think of Cloud computing and video, the words slow, expensive and glitchy often come to mind. Combined with the subscription pricing model that many software companies have moved to, you have something runs totally contrary to what Blackmagic Design CEO, Grant Petty, likes to refer to as their “company culture.” In his video introduction to their solution, Blackmagic Cloud, he points out to the painful reality that with a subscription model, if you lose your subscription, you lose your work. Some years ago, he realized that there was already a better way to go about this. His inspiration for Blackmagic’s cloud solution was email, where the internet provides the key communication link but the data is stored locally. It’s fast, efficient and private.
