Julia, Product Manager Associate, Lviv Early this year, as rumors about the possible Russian full-scale invasion were circulating all over the world, my husband and I moved from Odesa to Lviv, a city in the west of Ukraine. Once the war started, we applied to join Territorial Defense as volunteers. There, I learned how to make different types of Molotov cocktails, jokingly called here “Bandera Smoothie”, as Russian propaganda claims that Ukrainian Armed Forces are followers of Stepan Bandera, a head of Ukrainian nationalist movement in the first half of the twentieth century. Within only two days, we produced dozens of these “smoothies”. I’ve also been lucky enough to have an opportunity to translate the Javelin user’s manual from English to Ukrainian (I hold a Master’s in Philology of English and German and a PhD in English literature). Vlad, Video Production Specialist, Uzhgorod Soon after the full-scale invasion started, I went to the regional branch of the Red Cross in Uzhgorod, where they were recruiting volunteers. After the training, we were dispatched to places like the train station or the border checkpoint, where displaced people were going to other countries or just fleeing from the war. In general, I had shifts of 10-12 hours, day or night, where the first thing we had to do was provide psychological and medical assistance, distribute water and food. But as it turned out…in addition to these duties or other situations where people were hysterical or panicked, things like logistics, required documents, how to get where, and so on became a part of the assistance that we provided as volunteers. And we ended up helping people with the route and information on documents and customs and assisting those who needed lodging places. Cocktail hour
