Therefore we will make a composite glyph using an anchor - a point which can be used to attach one glyph to another automatically. First, place an anchor point in the new base character where you want the diacritic to attach (figure 1). Then place a corresponding anchor point in the diacritic glyph. When you generate the new glyph these two anchor points will automatically attach and voila!, your new accented character is born (figure 2). To make other characters with the same diacritic all you have to do is add anchor points to copies of the base character. And of course the same goes for adding other diacritics to the same base character (figure 3). Anchors are quite versatile. You can copy/paste them, add or remove them, link them to guidelines or to each other, name them, and activate or deactivate them. And they're not just for diacritics. They are also used in auto glyphs and in advanced OpenType features. Anchors are a powerful but simple tool for people who work with type. Give them a try next time you're missing a diacritic.
