MD: What advice would you give to fellow artists trying to break into the arts professionally? Would you recommend your work in product design to aspiring artists, since you are in that field yourself?
JR: As I mentioned before, I find it very valuable to constantly learn and develop new skills.
I keep an eye out for ads for short film projects (there are many interesting ones) to apply to. I have gotten some early storyboarding projects that way. They do not pay much and it’s time consuming, but it’s very creative, you learn a lot, and you build a portfolio that’s useful for applications for bigger projects.
Product design, on the other hand, helps pay the bills. It’s not always very creative, but it teaches you to work quickly and efficiently. You get a more technical perspective and learn how things are built. I think this can be especially useful in concept art to give objects a more authentic look.
