Pavel Prokopev - Creating Inspiring Worlds Words and illustrations by Pavel Prokopev MacDirectory: What kind of artist are you? Pavel Prokopev: I am a Communication Designer, but I spend most of my time creating content for game apps by designing unique and vivid characters, landscapes, backgrounds, avatars and interfaces. Although I have an education in the arts, I do not consider myself an artist - I just do what I love, and I have been doing it for 20 years! MD: What inspired you to become a designer? PP: I have been interested in video games since I was a kid. I loved playing Super Mario Bros. and Sonic the Hedgehog, and I really admired the art of the characters in those games and others. I used to draw my favorite characters all the time, and that inspired me to discover my passion and talent for art. MD: What is your process for creating a piece of art, from ideation to completion? PP: I am not the type of designer that brainstorms ideas. I like to sit down and get right to work, letting my hand guide me through CorelDRAW until I have something I am happy with. The artwork changes and flows as I work. It’s an exercise in trying different techniques, adding elements, making cuts, and comparing versions until I see what I think is a masterpiece. Of course, I always keep the client’s brief in mind when designing.
