What’s Up Front Counts Now that we’ve taken a look at what can go in and come out of the Mini Extreme, it’s time to go topside and see all the amazing things that can happen in between. And yep, it does look a bit intimidating at first glance. But like virtually all things Blackmagic, you’ll find it does make a lot of sense when you take a closer look. In what may be bad news for control room crews, the ATEM Mini Extreme hardware is designed for one-person operation. Above each of the eight input selectors, you’ll find both audio and camera (shading and focus) controls. Levels, both audio and video, are set by basic up- and down-arrow keys. Like an audio board, once you understand the control stack over a single selector, you’re good for all eight. If you are in a position to split the workload, you can have a string of other workstations on the ATEM network running their robust ATEM Software Control application to handle audio mixing (Fairlight-based), camera shading via a DaVinci Resolve panel for Blackmagic cameras, and MediaPlayer graphics–nearly all the front panel functions.
