If you’ve had the opportunity to set the AirPods Max over your ears, you’ll already know that they are a truly remarkable bit of design and engineering. They’re a concert hall, recording studio, and home theater system that rests very gently on your head. Combined with a recent iPhone or iPad (and the right source material), they offer spatial audio, essentially immersive virtual reality for your ears. The remarkable design and engineering, however, did not extend to the Max’s case, which is a little more than a dust cover with the magnets needed to put the headphones to sleep (like other AirPods, there is no actual on/off button). It’s almost as if they’ve been designed for the Covid era. They’re fine for working at home, but don’t even think about going out. San Francisco’s WaterField Designs was quickly out of the gate with an alternative and now, several months into the Max’s production run, they are still the best out there. True to form, they’re a bit pricey, but well worth it to protect an investment that is even more so.
