I don't think about my own style too much; I just do it. It's simplified, and fun and I like to use a lot of colors. People respond well to my art, and I love getting comments about what I do. Q - How much do your tools influence your style? For me, the tools I use don't have that much of an influence. However, there may be a bigger distinction when it comes to creating something in 2D and 3D. For example, when I use 3D software, the creation may turn out a little more realistic than my 2D works. Shaping something in 3D has more influence on the outcome, but when it comes to 2D creations, the tool doesn't matter so much, as long as the tool responds well. When you have more advanced tools, the execution becomes more professional, and the process more reliable, but the design aspect stays the same. Q - What advice do you have for people wanting to become professional creators? The most important thing is to never lose the passion that got you interested in art in the first place. It's important to keep learning, especially with so many excellent courses being available and accessible online. Pursue knowledge and observe life around you, especially if you want to become a visual development artist. If you want to paint with color, it's useful to observe how light and colors work in the environment. In the case of character design, you want to study from your influences, watch your favorite movies, and keep the passion alive. Let it push you to create the best work you can imagine. Make sure to show your work online, at the very best, show it to people in the field to get feedback. It will show in your work that you are pushing yourself to become better. Show your interest and path of exploration. It's important to pursue quality and push yourself to the heights of your ability. Then, lastly, you have to present your work at conventions or other events and meet people working in the field you're interested in. It may also be helpful to be more specific with your work, especially in the beginning. If you want to do character design, do a lot more characters. You can do a few props and color keys on the side, but you can still expand on your skills later. Q - What are your future goals regarding art? Right now, I am working at Rovio here in Finland, on a new game, which will be out in the near future. There is no specific path at this moment, but as long as I'm staying in the field of art, design, game design, and such, it will always be what I want to do: create something appealing, that fits within the respective production I am working on. As long as it's fun, I'm happy to do it. In the future, I would like to take on feature film development. While I have done that in the past to a degree, I might want to pursue that either as a designer or an art director. Another thing that I would like to do is to produce a short film or a graphic novel. I already have the ideas, I just need the time to focus on them, which I will hopefully have in the near future.
