INTERVIEW
be there, it saw me through a very weird,
hard moment in my life."
Initially "chilling out and focusing on my
work" were the only reasons Jade used the
store. After about six months, however,
Jade's computer usage evolved into
keeping daily journals of what she was
going through in her quest for a modeling
career. Eventually those journals became
so compelling that she decided to turn
them into a book.
Her novel, entitled
Almost 5' 4":
Confessions of an Unconventional Model
was published in June and has been selling
well. So well in fact that the Friday
Project, located in Great Britain, recently
bought worldwide publishing rites.
When asked how it felt to go from model
to author, Jade laughed and said it was a
great experience, though completely
unplanned. "I wasn't thinking I'm going to
write a book at the Apple store. I had
some journals that I had started to get out
the frustration and all the stuff that you
go through (in trying to start a modeling
career) that you can't really share with
people. So I just laid out what I had at the
Apple store and then I worked on figuring
out how to form it into a book."
Fortunately, Jade didn't have to look far.
The Apple store staff was more than
willing to offer her assistance and support
with her new project. To this day, Jade
cannot talk enough about how great the
Apple store employees were while she was
putting together her bio.
"I would have my computer of choice, and
every employee from the security guard
up knew me." The employees would also
do things like give her an extra 10 minutes
here and there so she could finish a
chapter, even when it meant shutting
down every computer but hers at closing
time. And when the book was complete,
the store manager even asked Jade if she
would do a reading at the store – an
invitation she accepted gladly.
Yet despite her success as an author, Jade
still spends most of her time focusing on
her modeling. Currently, she does a
weekly podcast in which she talks about
petite modeling and uses her experience
to offer advice to other "underdogs" who
want to break into the industry. "(The
podcast), like the book, is about helping
other underdogs and making a voice –
giving a voice to a side of the modeling
industry that isn't talked about."
She is also working on an idea she has for
a reality show in response to "America's
Next Top Model" called "America's Tiniest
Model or something like that."
Jade closed by telling
MacDirectory that in
spite of all the changes she's experienced
in the last year, she still goes to the Apple
store. "The Apple store is still a big part of
my life. I'm not trying to say, 'Go to the
Apple store everybody and find your
dream,' but for me personally it is a place
where people who are dreamers and who
are fighting to stay dreamers can go and
pursue their dreams."
