That's the goal of Zombies, Run!, a phenomenon that's cashing in on the trend of fitness-app gamification. The app will send you on an adventure that will motivate you to run further and faster than ever before. "It's like a TV show that you run to," the company says. "There's nothing else out there like it." The app immerses you in an action-packed game and story mixed with your own music, for anything from jogging in a park, to running along a trail, walking to work, or running on treadmills. If you want a serious workout, "turn on thrilling zombie chases that force you to speed up to escape the hordes!" the app instructs. Aside from the game, the app offers tracking and sharing functions through an online service it calls ZombieLink. Players can track their mission stats, view maps of their runs and track improvements in times and distances. It boasts more than 800,000 users and more than a million zombie hordes evaded. Perhaps more impressively, it is listed as part of the UK's NHS Health Apps Library, meaning it has been reviewed and deemed beneficial to the user's health and fitness. https://www.zombiesrungame.com ICEBLUEBUTTON by Humetrix The ICEBlueButton app allows users to easily create an ICE (In Case of Emergency) record on their smartphone. What makes this ICE app unique is that it generates a QR code that can be saved on the user's smartphone lock screen or printed on stickers for child car seats, helmets, etc. Medical responders or Good Samaritans at an emergency scene can read the QR code with any scanning app and immediately access the patient's designated medical information and emergency contact. This can be particularly relevant for any user with a medical condition or drug allergy, etc. In addition, when scanned, the app can send an email alert to the user's emergency contacts to let them know when and where the app was scanned. The app was on display at the White House's recent Disaster Response and Recovery Demo Day, an event that brings together technologists, entrepreneurs and members of the disaster response community. ICEBlueButton is free to download. An in-app purchase of $2.99 per month or $19.99 per year is available for generating Auto-Alerts, though the fee is currently being waived through October 30 to support the National Emergency Preparedness Campaign. http://www.icebluebutton.com COLUMN
