wet—unlike down which will leave you freezing once it’s soaked. Now, even if it’s wet and retaining heat, it’s still less comfortable than being dry, so Icebreaker uses a recycled polyester shell treated with a durable water repellent (DWR) finish. It won’t replace your raincoat or shell, but it will help you and that merino wool stay dry in a light rain. On the other side of that wool sandwich is a woven merino fabric interior lining all along the torso and hood. Like the insulation, it retains those merino properties. Did I mention merino is naturally breathable and odor resistant? Important characteristics for a cold weather coat that could otherwise get too warm. The upgraded lining is also nice to have on the hood around your face. A softer merino fabric lines each of the two zippered hand pockets, as well as the internal cuffs at the end of each sleeve. These sleeve cuffs are a cool feature that I don’t see on many coats. They keep cold air from running up your arms and work perfectly with a pair of gloves or mittens to eliminate any heat loss. They are sewn into the sleeve an inch or two deep—meaning they are invisible to outside observers or if you’re keeping it casual without hand protection. My vanity still gets the better of me, so I appreciate that the MerinoLoft Collingwood Hooded Jacket packs all that warmth and insulation into a package that doesn’t look bulky or puffy. About five horizontal channels keep everything in place and laying flat. The hood and sleeves have no exterior ornamentation, presenting a pretty clean look for a jacket that is so serious about its heat retention. Icebreaker has really leveraged merino wool’s strength throughout its product line, especially in its base layers and everyday items, but also in its outerwear and attire. If you’re aiming to look good while you stay warm, there’s no better place to start than Icebreaker. For more information, visit: www.icebreaker.com
