sink in those annual Call of Duty hooks that keep me coming back for one more game, even when it’s well past my bedtime. Returning Call of Duty veterans will notice an increased time to kill, and may recoil at the sight of enemy health bars floating above their heads. However, this is still Call of Duty, and it’s still the king of fast-paced shooters. Eight maps feel a little light at launch, but I’m hoping Treyarch will continue to support the game and release new experiences for players to discover together. And while I miss some of the smaller, tighter experience of Modern Warfare, Cold War adds vehicles to the mix in several of the modes, and still has some interesting twists on some classics. For the more cooperative-minded among us, Zombies mode makes a return, pitting you and 3 friends (or strangers) against a never-ending horde of undead, and testing your skill with a wide variety of weapons and non-stop action. The 2020 Zombies eschews some of the complex story-telling and new characters of years gone by and keeps things pretty traditional. While you can actually bring your operative and loadout with you into Zombies, buying new weapons, equipping buffs, and upgrading your gear are all still essential for success. It’s a return to a darker, more gruesome version of zombies, that seems appropriate after the last few entries have really pushed the bounds of the whacky and zany. Only time will tell where Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War falls in the pantheon of the franchise’s long history, but rest assured that it is another gorgeously produced, content-rich experience with the best gunplay in the business. If you’re looking for a first person shooter to have fun, get competitive, or hang out with some friends, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has something for everyone.
